Radix Panacis quinguefolii is the dried root of Panax quinquefolium L. (Fam. Araliaceae). It's collected in autumn, fumed with sulphur, driedi n the sun and sliced.

Effects on CNS |
xi yang shen had bi-directional regulating effect on CNS. |
Influence over physical strength |
xi yang shen could prolong the anoxic tolerance time under normal pressure in mice, it had anti-fatigue effect and could increase specific defending ability to various harmful stimulations. |
Effects on endocrine system |
xi yang shen could stimulate the secretions of adrenal cortical hormone. Its extract could increase the plasma corticosterone level in guinea pigs. xi yang shen had antidiuretic effect. |
Others |
Saponins of xi yang shen could prevent and treat arrhythmia induced by BaCl2 in rats. xi yang shen could promote immune functions.

Diabetes |
Diabetes of Lung Dryness pattern was treated with Ren Shen Bai Hu Tang: sheng shi gao, hai shan yao fen, 30g each; zhi mu, xi yang shen, mai dong, 10g each; hua fen 15. 136 out of 180 treated cases were effective. |
Infantile paralytic ileus |
xi yang shen, chen pi, 3~6g; yi yi ren, bai zhu, jin yin hua, huang qi, 6~10g each; chao mai ya 10~15g; jue ming zi, fang feng, 10~15g; chai hu, fa ban xia, 1.5~3g. 1 dose daily, 1~3 doses totally. 10 out of 12 treated cases were effective. |
Arrhythmia |
Shu Xin Tang: xi yang shen, zhi gan cao, gui zhi, dang gui, shui zhi, 10g each; ku shen, dan shen, ge gen, 30g each; xuan shen 15g; chuan xiong 12g. 23 cases were treated and all were effective. |
