Da Zao

sweet, slightly warm nourishes the Centre, invigorates qi,  
nourishes Blood, calms shen, moderates drug properties

Sheng Jiang

acrid, slightly warm disperses Cold, relieves the Exterior, 
warms the Centre, stops vomiting, removes toxic agents


Major therapeutic action
Harmonises ying and wei, strengthens the Spleen and harmonises the Centre.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  Sweating, aversion to Wind, fever due to disharmony between ying and wei.

Combinations
*  For exterior deficiency syndrome caused by external affection of Wind-Cold, add Gui Zhi/Bai Shao.
*  Combine with Si Jun Zi Tang and Chen Pi/Ban Xia for Spleen deficiency with Phlegm-Dampness.
