Zhi Mu/Tian Hua Fen/Sha Shen

anemarrhena asphodeloides, Trichosanthes kirilowii & adenophora tetrephylla

Zhi Mu	bitter, sweet, cold	clears Heat, purges Fire, clears and discharges the Lung and Stomach, allays deficiency fever and eliminates Heat
Tian Hua Fen	bitter, slightly sweet	clears and discharges the Lung and Stomach, generates Fluid and quenches thirst, relieves swelling and discharges pus
Sha Shen	sweet, slightly cold	clears Heat, nourishes yin, moistens the Lung, and nourishes the Stomach

Major therapeutic action
Clears Heat and Phlegm from the Lung and Stomach, promotes salivation, quenches thirst, nourishes Body Fluids.

* cough, asthma in severe cases
* fever
* dry mouth and lips
* irritability
* red tongue, with thin, yellow coat
* surging and large pulse

Indications
* Lung-Heat and Dryness.
* Can be used in the treatment of abscesses in the Lung and Stomach.
* With the appropriate key symptoms, this formula can be used to treat pneumonia, bronchitis, pleurisy, asthma and diabetes.

Dosage
The typical dose is three grams twice daily, before meals. In severe cases or the early stages of treatment (the first two weeks), a 50-100% increase in dose may be used, then reduced as the treatment takes effect.

Combinations
* For cough due to Phlegm-Heat, add Qing Fei Tang.
* For cough due to Lung deficiency, add Sheng Mai San.
