Panax ginseng (Ren Shen, ginseng)

Indications
*  Chronic respiratory disorders with cough and wheezing.
*  Convalescence following a severe febrile illness.
*  Cardiac disorders–palpitations, arrhythmias, disturbances of the mind (insomnia, emotional disturbances).
*  This elegant formula has a wide application, and as long as the basic pattern is one of deficiency, it can be used to treat a variety of cardiac and respiratory disorders such as chronic asthma and persistent cough, cardiac arrhythmia, tachycardia, chronic bronchitis, post febrile weakness, post coronary artery bypass debility, coronary artery disease and digestive weakness.

Key symptoms for use
*  chronic cough or wheeze with little or no sputum, or hard to expectorate sputum
*  shortness of breath
*  easy sweating
*  palpitations, tachycardia
*  insomnia
*  a pink or red and swollen tongue, perhaps with many small surface cracks
*  weak or irregular pulse

Combinations
*  With severe palpitations, add Long Gu & Mu Li.
*  For profuse sweating with concentrated urine, add Dang Gui & Huang Qi.
*  With irritability and insomnia, add Yè Jiao Teng & He Huan Pi.
Dosage
The typical dose is three grams twice daily, before meals. In severe or acute cases, or the early stages of treatment (the first two weeks), a 50-100% increase in dose may be used, then tapered off as the treatment takes effect.

Cautions and contraindications
Avoid concurrent use with stimulants and heating foods, like coffee, chilli, excessive alcohol and cola drinks.
Contraindicated in the early stages of a febrile illness, or when there is residual pathogenic influence remaining.
