Ren Shen

sweet, slightly bitter, neutral greatly invigorates Primary qi, nourishes the Lung 
and the Spleen, tranquillises tthe Heart, calms shen

Ge Jie

salty, neutral nourishes the Lung and the Kidney, calms asthma,
relieves cough, tonifies the Kidney, reinforces yang


Major therapeutic action
Invigorates qi, calms asthma.

 Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  Deficiency of the Lung and the Kidney due to prolonged illness, asthma, facial oedema, and loss of voice.

Cautions and contraindications
Excessive use or misusage of Ren Shen may result in qi obstruction, which is manifested as stuffy chest, abdominal distension, etc.
Ren Shen is contraindicated in patients with excessive syndromes, such as initial stage of exterior syndromes, exuberant internal Heat, Damp obstruction, food stagnation, etc.

Combinations
*  For cough and asthma with yellow and sticky sputum, add Chuan Bei Mu/Xing Ren.
*  With Kidney yin deficiency, combine with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan and Wu Wei Zi.
