Zhi Shi

bitter, cool breaks up stagnant qi, directs qi downwards and opens the bowels

Jie Geng

bitter, acrid circulates Lung qi, benefits the throat, directs qi upwards, aids in discharge of pus


Major therapeutic action
One herb moves down, the other moves up. When combined they re-establish the correct movement of energy in digestion. This alleviates the accumulation of energy in the middle.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams 2-3 times daily.

Indications
*  Abdominal and epigastric bloating. Can be added to any formula to alleviate bloating.

*  With Ban Xia Xie Xin Tang for severe epigastric bloating and discomfort from a mixture of digestive weakness and heat accumulation.
