Dioscorea opposita, Pueraria lobata, Saussurea lappa

 

Major therapeutic action
Strengthens the digestion, moves energy and stops diarrhoea.

Key symptoms for use
o  chronic cough and/or wheeze with copious thin watery or white sputum
o  distension and fullness in the chest
o  greasy white tongue coat

Indications
o  Chronic diarrhoea associated with symptoms of postprandial abdominal distension, lethargy, sallow complexion, and loose stools.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily. For children reduce the dose by 50-75%.
Combinations
o  With Si Jun Zi Tang for chronic diarrhoea with symptoms of postprandial abdominal distension, lethargy, sallow complexion, and loose stools.
o  For thirst associated with diabetes, combined with Liu Wei Di Huang Wan.
