Bai Qian

bitter, acrid, neutral transforms Phlegm, relieves cough

Qian Hu

bitter, acrid, slightly cold transforms Phlegm, relieves cough


Major therapeutic action
Lowers qi, disperses Wind, relieves cough, transforms Phlegm.

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Initial stage of cough, difficulty in expectoration, itchy throat.
o  Stuffy chest.

Cautions and contraindications
Bai Qian is a quite strong expectorant and can slightly stimulate the stomach. The dosage should not be large in patients with stomach diseases.
Bai Qian is contraindicated in dry cough due to Lung deficiency.

Combinations
o  Can be added to Sang Ju Yin or Yin Qiao San for initial stage of flu with cough.
