Chen Pi

Ban Xia

acrid, warm dries Damp, transforms Phlegm,
redirectes qi downwards and harmonises the Stomach


Major therapeutic action
Resolves Phlegm, stops vomiting and nausea, harmonises the digestion

Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Nausea and vomiting. Together this pair forms the basis of Er Chen Tang, the main formula for all Phlegm patterns. Can be used alone for nausea, morning sickness and motion sickness.
o  Productive acute or chronic cough with copious white sputum.

Cautions and contraindications
Avoid concurrent use with phlegm and fluid generating foods, such as dairy products, deep fried foods and uncooked vegetables.
Contraindicated in dry conditions possibly with afternoon or low grade fever or nausea and vomiting with a sensation of burning or heat.

Combinations
o  With Si Jun Zi Tang to create Liu Jun Zi Tang, the main formula for maldigestion patterns with phlegm and fluid accumulation with symptoms of heaviness, loose stools, and lethargy.
o  With Zhi Sou San for persistent cough with copious sputum.
