Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
*  A fundamental and important pair for pain with a fixed stabbing nature and a purplish tongue.  Can be added to any appropriate formula where severe pain is a problem. Especially good for menstrual, abdominal and hypochondriac pain.

Cautions and contraindications
Caution in very deficient patients.
None noted.

Combinations
*  With Xue Fu Zhu Yu Tang for severe pain. This combination is particularly good for chronic migraine, post-herpetic neuralgia and other chronic pain syndromes.
*  With 154 Dang Gui Shao Yao Tang for dysmenorrhoea and premenstrual fluid retention.
*  With Si Ni San for crampy abdominal pain associated with irritability and emotional upset causing digestive symptoms.
