Major therapeutic action
Calms the mind, sedates rising of heat with symptoms of headache, dizziness, dry mouth and throat, insomnia, irritability, facial flushing, and red tongue. |
Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75-
90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three
grams twice daily. |
Indications
o Anxiety, palpitations, insomnia, dream-disturbed sleep. Best when the mind is quite disturbed and agitated, usually as a result of heat or some other excess pattern.
o Dizziness, tinnitus, headaches and visual disturbances. These substances combined powerfully ‘weigh
down’ and suppress the rising of symptoms.
o Abnormal leakage of fluids: this includes such symptoms as excessive sweating (spontaneous and night
sweats), frequent urination or nocturia and vaginal discharge. |
Cautions and contraindications
Can be hard on the digestion, so should generally be combined with some herbs to harmonise the digestion.
None noted. |
Combinations
o Can be added to any formula when a strong mind calming, sedating or astringent effect is required. |
