Ju Hong

 acrid, bitter, warm dries Damp, transforms Phlegm, moves qi, relieves distension and fullness, strengthens the Spleen, harmonises the Centre

Zi Wan

acrid, bitter, slightly warm transforms Phlegm, stops cough


Major therapeutic action
Relieves cough, transforms Phlegm.

 Dosage
The typical proportion when added to a constitutional formula is 6:1 formula to addition (15 grams in 75- 90 grams of formula). If a stronger effect is desired more can be added. When used alone the dose is three grams twice daily.

Indications
o  Dysfunction of qi activity, Phlegm obstructing in the chest, cough with sputum, stuffy chest.

Combinations
o  With profuse sputum, add Chen Pi/Ban Xia.
o  With profuse sputum and qi stagnation, combine with San Zi Yang Qin Tang.
